About Back-Up
Back-Up (levonorgestrel), also known as “Morning-After Pill”, is an emergency contraceptive medication containing levonorgestrel that can prevent conception if it is taken within 72 hours following unprotected intercourse.
How it works
The Levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone, prevents ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary) or interferes with fertilization by altering the cervical mucus and making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.
It's most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex but it is not intended for regular contraceptive use.
